Having owned both and USED both in the offroad application in Africa , I know which one is best and which one does not break , which is very important in large open places , defenders are better suited to european conditions where help is always only a few hours away at most . Dependability is paramount offroad , not electronic trickery and yes , the last ones (puma 2.4 and 2.2 ) benefited from electronic trickery , where the Toyota has manual front and rear lockers , with central locker available in low ranger 4x4 . Take out the abs fuse in a 2007 to 2015 and you find how singularly useless the central diff lock system is when oppsing wheels are short of traction . Diff locks front and rear dont suffer that problem . Do I enjoy the old defender , yes , do I want to own one again , no not really , do I want to own a Land Cruiser 70 series , yes , most definately once my Range Rover hits depreciation write off point , a brand new , zero km Toyota LC 70 series is in my driveway . I think that in itself speaks volumes , I have never before had to depreciate a car to zero to be able to get out of it , thats how bad LR products are these days .

My '96 300tdi has been "on the limit" for the past 3 years here in France which seems to have similar limits. This year I used some of that injector cleaner in the fuel and I "turned down" the deisel pump. I turned the pump screw 1/2 turn because a few years back, a new bigger intercooler was fitted and the garage boosted the pump to get more power. The MoT tester said it was well within the limits. I also changed oil and the deisel filter so what actually made the difference, I don't know.

Why not go to the supermarket. Do your shopping and then check your oil when you've finished. Surely easier than emptying the garage?

The landy saw your other landy, got upset and gave up. Second hand landy's are a gamble. You dont know what the maintance was before you had it. It has done well considering landrover never galvernised chassis. Most modern cars last 100, 000 miles. It is time. If you have time to rebuild, keep it. If you dont have time, give it a chance of a new life by letting some else rebuild it. Best of luck.

I did what you did just this morning while working on ball joints.. didn't mean to, wish I hadn't .. next time I'll only use a hammer to break the bolt free...I put it all back together painstakingly, but that last part with the thin metal clamp (that I didn't have) cost me an hour of heavy duty brain power trying to reseal the boot to the bolt.. not my proudest moment .. now seeing this, I'm relieved, but also a little more butt hurt for the time I wasted today. Thanks

Great story Will, it is so true that there are two sides to infrastructure improvements. It was a real eye opener on this trip and on others I've been on. Seeing more traffic push into the Kalahari and Namibia also gives me mixed emotions. It can't all stay as it was, and improvements for the locals is key, but I do always feel we are losing just a little more of the wildness that makes this planet such an incredible place. Cheers!

These armchair mechanics piss me off, there is nothing wrong with replacing the boot as long as the joint is in good condition . If the joint is bad it will still fail an MOT new boot or otherwise, the way the joint is tested is to put a fairly long bar underneath to check for movement and new boot will not stop that. He has also greased the joint which will extend the life of the joint. As long as the boot has not been split for an extended period there is no reason not to do this.

I'd take the defender anyday, I feel they are fairly reliable based on experiences shared by Defender owners from africa and as you have mentioned it's the all wheel coilover setup and full time 4x4 system that makes us like them even more. A td5 or a 300tdi would be great pick for me.

I watched the video but I don't know if the answer to my question is in it. That's why I have to ask for help. I have a 300 TDI ROW (lhd). I want to fit a main harness from the td5 because it has a lot of features that I don't have on the td5, but mainly ABS, which is not available on any TDI harness. So the question is whether the td5 harness will fit the tdi, especially if the engine connectors are the same. Or if there are any incompatibilities TY

Hi, Hopefully, you're still monitoring this channel. I'm relocating the rear heater, fog light and hazard switches from lower right (steering wheel) to a central console as per the video. Can you explain the re-wiring steps that use existing 300TDI wires into TD5 switches ? For example, fog light only has 2 wires (white and white/green trace), but is this just straight plug and play via 5 PIN connectors to the right 2 terminals only ? Similarly for rear heated window. Yours, frustrated amateur !
